SWCA Environmental Consultants Case Study

Growing environmental consulting firm empowers Project Managers, reduces DSO and increases efficiency by 50% using Deltek Vision.

Starting as a small office, SWCA recently celebrated its 30-year anniversary with growth to over 750 employees across more than 20 offices. But even though the firm experienced an average of 12% growth a year—despite the current economic downturn—SWCA still experienced some internal challenges when it came to project management and financial management.
Because the company had to rely on multiple, stand-alone systems, information was not getting into the hands of the people who needed it. “As the business was growing, we found that our data was being delivered to the finance and accounting teams, but not to the project managers,” said Michael Truax, Director of IT for SWCA. “PMs had a hard time wrapping their minds around the data, because it was in two separate systems with two completely different databases.

Also, most of our tools were homegrown, so besides not having a consistent feel, it would take weeks of back and
forth to report on how projects were doing.”

SWCA knew what it needed to remove its project management obstacles: a solution that connected the entire organization around its projects that was delivered on a single, secure system and provided accurate, reliable data in real-time as well as unlimited visibility for project managers into the health and status of its projects.

Top 8 Best Practices to Increase your Resource Utilization

How to Increase your Utilization Rate and reduce the need for subcontractors

“In today’s challenging economic climate…” How many times have you read that opening phrase in media articles? Yes, things have been challenging fiscally, and indeed remain so, not least for Professional Services Organizations (PSOs). They have perhaps suffered more than other types of organizations.

Why? Because they don’t manufacture products but rather sell consulting services, or more specifically, people skills – and that’s a much tougher sell today. But through good or bad times, the equation that defines business success for PSOs remains the same: optimizing people skills = increased profitability.

While the math may be simple, of course, the realization of this potential can be a lot more challenging. Resource Management is emerging as the solution to solving this equation. It effectively provides a framework within which PSOs can easily and effectively plan, implement and deploy their people skills. This White Paper explains what Resource Management is, and outlines the ‘Key Best Practices’ PSOs should adopt to optimize their resources and therefore maximize their profitability.

Best Practices Webinar Recording: How Tech-Centric Firms are Outperforming the Competition

Best Practices Webinar: How Tech-Centric Firms have turned Digital Disruption into a Competitive Weapon

The One Hundred Pound Digital Gorilla in the Room

According to a recent survey of over 500 consulting firm leaders, the top five business issues keeping firm leaders up at night are:

1) Attracting and developing new business,

2) Dealing with an increasingly competitive marketplace,

3) Finding and keeping good people,

4) Innovating new ideas, and

5) Coming up with the right strategy to drive growth.

I’m guessing at least one of these issues has caused a few sleepless nights for you as well. But at the center of all these issues is a one hundred pound digital gorilla that somehow did not make the list. This gorilla goes by a dizzying array of names, such as McKinsey’s digital disruption, IDC’sdigital transformation, BCG’s digital economy, Forbes’ digital revolution, and most recently, Forrester’s digital automation shift.

Whatever we decide to call it, there’s no denying that digital automation is transforming the consulting industry in much the same way it has already wreaked havoc with other industries, such as media, music, retail, and the list goes on.

So if we know what happens to organizations that ignore change, why are so many of us sticking our proverbial heads in the sand when it comes to the consulting industry?

I’m afraid I do not have an answer for you. But, I do know that the successful firms — firms like Consulting Magazine’s Fastest Growing Firms or SPI Research’s “best of the best”– are the same firms that have embraced digital disruption and made digital automation work for them. In other words, tech-centric firms are emerging as the winners of the consulting industry.

How? By using technology to address those nagging business problems I mentioned earlier – winning new business, crushing the competition, finding and keeping top talent, innovating better and faster, and developing informed, data-driven strategies for growth. Two of these tech-centric firms, Sapient and Slalom Consulting, have agreed to share their stories and the “how” behind the stories in a FREE, live webinar (Download recording below), hosted by Consulting magazine.  In addition, industry experts will be on hand to explore the topic from an industry perspective and address individual questions you may have, such as:

What steps should your firm be taking right now to make technology your competitive weapon?
